Campus Bird Walk at Govt. Nehru PG College, Dongargarh, Chhattisgarh

Highlights from the Event

Under the guidance of Pratik Thakur, the bird walk at Govt. Nehru PG College, Dongargarh turned into a lively introduction to the campus’s surprisingly rich birdlife. Open grounds, scattered trees, and wet patches supported a nice mix of common resident birds and a few more striking sightings, giving participants a chance to observe behavior as much as identification. The morning featured familiar campus species such as Common Myna, House Sparrow, Rock Pigeon, Spotted Dove, Laughing Dove, and Red-vented Bulbul, while more active insect-hunters like Black Drongo, Asian Green Bee-eater, and Streak-throated Swallow kept the walk energetic. Purple Sunbirds were especially noticeable, moving constantly among flowering patches, and Indian Robin added charm with its repeated appearances around open edges and pathways.

The walk became even more rewarding with sightings of species that reflected the diversity of habitats around the college. A Paddyfield Pipit and Indian Bushlark highlighted the grassier sections, while Grey Francolin and Greater Coucal gave the group memorable ground-level encounters. Tree cover produced Indian Grey Hornbill and Brahminy Starling, and the presence of Indian Pied Starling added further variety. Wetland-associated birds such as Medium Egret, Black-headed Ibis, and Red-wattled Lapwing showed how even nearby water-influenced areas contribute to campus biodiversity. Altogether, the checklist of 21 species made the walk both educational and enjoyable, reinforcing how a college campus can serve as an important green space for birds and for budding birdwatchers alike.
